   Prof. Sung-Yool Choi received BS (with Summa Cum Laude), MS, and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Chemistry, KAIST, in 1991, 1994, and 1998, respectively. During the graduate study he worked on the classical and quantum mechanical dynamics of nonlinear systems on the theoretical basis under the supervision of Prof. Eok-Kyun Lee. He had been with the Basic Research Laboratory at Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea, as a senior/principal researcher from Mar. 1998 to Oct. 2011, where he worked on the development of various functional electronic devices, including field emission display devices, high-density optical data storage devices, molecular electronic devices, nonvolatile memory, and flexible electronics. From Jul. 2006 to Jun. 2007, he had been a visiting scholar at the Center for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE; led by Prof. Bill Milne), University of Cambridge, UK, where he worked on the chemical sensors based on nanomaterials. From Jan. 2010 to Oct. 2011, he served as the director of Creative Research Center for Graphene Electronics, a research center on the graphene-based flexible electronic devices at ETRI. He had also been an adjunct professor in Advanced Device Technology Major (ETRI School) at the University of Science and Technology (UST).

   In November 2011, Prof. Choi joined the faculty of School of Electrical Engineering, KAIST, where he established the Quantum Materials and Devices Laboratory (QMDL) f.k.a. Molecular and Nano Device Laboratory (MNDL). His primary research objectives have been to understand the underlying principle in the conduction/switching behavior of a single molecule or molecular-scale materials and to develop functional devices utilizing these materials. The research in QMDL is focused on the nano-scale materials and devices for the next-generation IT-ET-BT convergence technology. Synthesis and process technologies for two-dimensional (2D) materials and the electronics and photonics applications of them are the main research topics. He is serving the directorship of two research centers, Graphene/2D Materials Research Center (GRC, since Apr. 2012) and Center for Advanced Materials Discovery towards 3D Display (CAMD³, since Nov. 2016).

   Prof. Choi has authored 160+ peer-reviewed papers and contributed 200+ presentations at international/domestic conferences. He holds 44 Korean and 17 US patents, 3 of which were licensed to global display/electronics companies. He received several academic awards including the Prime Minister's Award for Research Innovation in Nanotechnology at Nano Korea 2015, KIDS Silver Award at IMID 2016, the Prize for Academic Excellence of KAIST(2017), and Convergence Research Award of the Year 2018, KAIST (2019). He received the Outstanding Lectureship Awards from the School of Electrical Engineering, KAIST, in 2014 and from UST, in 2009, respectively, and the Grand Prize for Special Outstanding Faculty Awards in Social Service Sector, KAIST (Apr. 2020).
